Rural Hospital Medicine SMO position at Dunstan Hospital

 SMO Positions commencing February 2024

Dunstan Hospital is a 24 bed rural hospital located in Clyde, Central Otago, which is run by Central Otago Health Services Limited.

We have approximately 0.8-1.0 fixed-term Senior FTE positions to fill from 29th January 2024.
This position will cover sabbatical leave.

The position would ideally suit someone finishing vocational training in Rural Hospital Medicine, however those with existing vocational registration are also invited to apply.

Opportunity exists to complete a ‘fellowship’ in Rural Hospital Medicine and this concept has been endorsed by the division of Rural Hospital Medicine NZ.

Non Clinical time will be provided to appropriate applicants allowing them to develop areas of special interest such as (but not limited to) minor procedures or simulation training.

You will join a well-established senior clinical team striving for excellence in rural medicine with an emphasis on collegiality and the adaptability that comes with rural health. The stable senior medical staff will support transition to independent practise for a candidate looking to complete RHM fellowship with us. We are well supported by specialist services in the Southern DHB and work closely with local GP’s to care for a community of >30,000+ people. Our hospital services a large area including Roxburgh, Alexandra, Cromwell and Wanaka.

Clinical services at Dunstan Hospital include: Acute 24-hour 24 bed inpatient care, rehabilitation and palliative care, and a 3-bed high dependency unit. We look after primary afterhours care from 6pm, and have on-site radiology (incl. CT) and lab (incl. blood bank) who are on call overnight. In addition are a number of outpatient services (including chemotherapy, endoscopy and day surgery with Mobile Surgical Services) and community services.

As a team we take responsibility for the assessment and management of acute patients as well as patients requiring rehabilitation or palliative care. All the seniors are trained in point of care ultrasound. We have a strong teaching focus and a number of seniors have appointments with the University of Otago either through the Rural Postgraduate Programme or the Rural Health Academic Centre in Ashburton. We have RHM trainee registrars, house officers on community runs and host undergraduate 5th & 6th year medical students, nursing students, and allied health students.
